All isolates with MICs of ciprofloxacin of at least 4 μg per milliliter were serotyped by the National Reference Center for Streptococcus (Edmonton,Alta.) with the use of type-specific antiserum.19 The genomic DNA of two groups of 12 and 14 randomly chosen isolates with MICs of ciprofloxacin of 1 μg per milliliter and 2 μg per milliliter,respectively,as well as all isolates with MICs of ciprofloxacin of at least 4 μg per milliliter,were examined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis after digestion with SmaI in order to clarify clonal relationships.20,21 These isolates were further characterized by polymerase-chain-reaction and restriction-fragment–length polymorphism analysis with HinfI for the most commonly recognized mutations in parC and gyrA associated with resistance to fluoroquinolones that have previously been described in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.22,23
