VICTOR Hugo's Les Miserables (1862) has carried its success into the 21st century with its recent film adaptation.The movie won three Academy Awards on Feb 25,including Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway.And it arrived in Chinese theaters on Thursday.
The original story's great popularity comes from the way Hugo humanized the struggles of his age.He makes us see,hear and smell the human beings of the time,and makes vivid and immediate characters out of people who are often simply “the masses” in history books.
Jean Valjean is released from prison after a 19-year sentence.His crime was stealing a loaf of bread and trying to escape after being imprisoned.No one will provide him with a place to sleep,so in desperation Valjean turns to a priest for help.He repays the priest by stealing from him.However,when the police come,the priest covers for him.In return,Valjean promises he will turn away from crime,Under the name Madeleine.Valjean makes a fortune and enriches the town,eventually becoming its mayor.
Another major strand of the story concerns Cosette.Her mother,Fantine,originally became pregnant with her by a wealthy student who abandoned her.Entrusting Cosette to cruel guardians,Fantine goes to work in Valjean's factory.But she loses her job when it is discovered that she had a daughter without being married.Valjean tries to help Fantine but the policeman Javert intervenes.He forces Valjean to confess his real identity and Valjean ends up back in jail.Fantine then dies in shock.
Upon escaping again from prison,Valjean takes on the responsibility of raising Cosette.The young Cosette finds her true love,Marius Pontmercy,an idealistic studeng who wants to bring revolutionand democracy to France.But Valjean is resistant to Cosette's relationship with Pontmercy.When Pontmercy and his comrades start an uprising,the young man is injured.Valjean saves the man Cosette loves and the two young people eventually marry.
This gripping story with a large heart is not easily forgotten,which is why new adaptations for the stage and screen keep coming out.Many people will see the new film because of the famous musical,but readers should check out this classic novel for themselves to discover the great drama that Hugo put together from the turbulent times he lived through.
