We conducted regression techniques to assess if there were a significant interaction term for the effectiveness of active job search on starting wages (see Table 3).In Model 1,we first entered the country labor market. There were significant wage differences between samples and this variable alone accounted for 75% of the variance in wages. This could minimize the effects of the control variables. In Model 2,we then entered the control variables of age, gender,GPA and preparatory job search.Together, these variables explained an additional 3% of the variance with GPA,gender and preparatory job search being significant in the expected directions. In Model 3,we entered active job search which was significant (b¼.12,po.01) and explained an additional 1% of the variance. It confirms that active job search is positively related to starting wage, after taking into consideration those students’ demographic variables as well as their preparatory job search efforts. Finally,in model 4,we entered the interaction term, which was statistically significant (b¼.59,po.05; DR2¼.01; DF¼5.38; po.05).Such interaction result indicates that the positive influence of job search activities on starting wages would be decreased in China (with the dummy variable Source equal to 2) than in the United States (Source equal to 1).Even though the job applicants in China are diligent to involve themselves in the job search activities, their efforts are not so effective as compared with those US students. It supports hypothesis 3 that active job search is less significant in predicting initial salary in China than in the United States. This could possibly be due to the lack of job-related information in the Chinese job market.
As supplemental analysis,we analyzed the regression result separately for China and the United States.Only grade point average predicted wages in China, whereas gender,GPA,and active job search all influenced starting wages in the United States.
6.Discussion
In summary, the findings of this research suggest that job seekers’ job search practices varied between China and the United States and the degree of aggressive recruitment may be an underlying a factor in these differences. The findings suggest that preparatory job search is used less in China than in the United States and that active job search is used similarly in the United States compared with in China. The findings also support the assumption that active job search is likely to be less effective in developing labor markets than in developed labor markets.
